Handicap Vans
Handicap vans are a real help for people with disabilities who need to travel greater distances than their handicap scooter will take them, or when the weather is so bad that it would be dangerous to use it. So what exactly is a handicap van and under what circumstances would one be used?
Handicap vans are basically specially adapted vehicles that allow ease of access for wheelchair users so that they can be driven from place to place in comfort and without the difficulties that trying to use a regular car are confronted. The size of the vehicle is important to allow a wheelchair and its occupant to be wheeled into the vehicle through a side door so as not to expose the person to traffic of other dangers. For this reason a regular car, whether a sedan or station wagon is simply not large or tall enough.
So a panel van or MPV is used and adapted so that a wheelchair can be pushed along an extensible ramp from the sidewalk into the vehicle without difficulty. This type of vehicle has the added height to allow for easy entry and exit of wheelchair, user and helper and inside has special brackets that allow for the securing of the wheelchair so that iot will not move or roll around while the vehicle is in motion.
This type of vehicle is highly useful for taking a person with disabilities on a journey that requires road travel that could not be accomplished with their own mobility scooter or being physically pushed in their wheelchair by an assistant.
